Disable Use of Power Button

I have MDK 9.2 and Win2k. In Win2k, you cannot press the power button to shut down the computer (unless you press it for 15 seconds.) In MDK 9.2, you just press the power button and the computer shuts off. I have teen-agers who bypass my screen lock to boot into Windows. This is unacceptable. Is there a way to disable the power button under MDK 9.2?

Thanks,
Ted.

They could still hold it for 15 seconds or unplug it so your windows needs a password.

If you trap the power switch you can have it run something other than shutdown.

powerswitch.o should work on that machine

Thanks for the reply. I have no idea how to do that but at least I know what to look up. I may just disconnect the power button from the motherboard. Last night I set up a power-on password in BIOS so even if they turn the power of they'll never get past POST without the password.

Kids are a pain!

Happy Holidays.

The powerswitch.o is a module that you will need to load.

You will need to download it and compile the module. You need your kernel source and the development tools installed to build kernel modules. Then you can load the module and your power button will work for a proper shutdown the same as windows does.

Thanks. I just disconnected the cable that runs from the power button to the motherboard. Even if someone finds the power switch on the power supply, they wont be able to turn the computer back on. That should keep little hands out of my computer unsupervised.

Thanks,
Ted.
