Dial-up DNS won't configure in KPPP

I'm currently trying to use KPPP under Mandrake 10.0 Community to no avail. I was able to successfully configure HSF soft-modem drivers for the modem in my Dell Inspiron 5100, so the computer does dial to the server. In addition, I do get a CONNECT signal in the log. However, it still doesn't connect to the internet and I suspect this is because Mandrake is not correctly configuring DNS.

I'm typing this on the same computer with the same dial-up connection, only in Windows (noooo!!), so this is definitely a problem somewhere in my Linux configuration. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try this link which gives u the kppp configure run through
http://www.linuxheadquarters.com/how...ing/kppp.shtml
if u r using adsl with ppp0e u may have set ur dns manually
u can try netconfig
or u can edit /etc/resolv.conf and include your dns servers

Bad troubleshooting on my part

Ok, here's the only way I was able to get it working, but it's still unsatisfactory, as I'll have to use root privileges every single time.

1. Use Mandrakelinux Control Center to remove ppp0. (need root privileges)
2. Use "New Connection" to add ppp0 and have it try to connect to the Internet. The modem dials but the connection fails.
3. Use KPPP to try to connect. It fails to properly communicate the modem. Clicked cancel to go back to KPPP logon window.
4. Try to connect again using KPPP. Now it works.

I used "tail /var/log/messages" only to find that I am picking up an IP address every time the modem dials without fail. This is weird.

EDIT: Please note that I have to do this every single time I log onto the Internet. If I disconnect and reconnect afterwards, it does not work; I have to go through the above process again.

Thanks again.

when u r connected using windoze what ip address do u get then? is it set to obtain the ip by dhcp in which case have u set up your linux box to use dhcp. Also have u definitely got the right driver for your modem as it could possibly be a driver issue
