Dell D600 hangs on lid close
 

Hi,

Not sure if I should post this here or in the laptops forum, but here goes...

I have Mandrake 9.2 installed on my Dell D600 laptop. It mostly works (no sound), which I guess I can live with. However when I close the lid the laptop hangs and requires a hard reboot (hold down the power switch). These are pretty common laptops, so I'm hoping someone has solved this already. Does anyone have any tips?

I have the same laptop, so let me think back to what I did to fix it. As far as fixing the sound on that laptop in 9.2, you need to change the driver to the i810-snd, i think that's what I did in 9.2. I had to do that in 10. also.

I THINK to fix the laptop locking up when the lid closed i did noacpi... i *think*. I will double check when I get home and post if there is anything different.

Thanks for your reply ... Can you clarify what you mean by noacpi? Is this a configuration option somewhere? I've looked all over the Mandrake configuration tools and can't find any references to power management.

I still don't have sound, not sure how to change the driver. But the lid thing is more important to me.

noacpi is a kernel option. You need to pass it to the kernel at boot time. Do you know what bootloader you are using?

If the lid close causes it to hang, then acpi is sending a signal to the kernel upon lid close as it should.

However the machine may be told to enter a hibernation state which Linux does not handle very well causing it to freeze.

Since this seems to be working DO NOT disable ACPI, rather fix the problem.


You have to modify the behavior of the machine when it receives an acpi signal for lid close.

I set mine to merely blank the screen on lid close and perform a shutdown on a tap of the power button (I don't have a Dell though...).

To do so I modified the acpi configuration entries.

edit /etc/acpi/events/lid

and change what follows

action=

... to what you want your machine to do when the lid is closed.



That's it!

Problem fixed.




ACPI is also required to enable your multimedia keys (once you get your sound running this is important!).

You can install ACME

urpmi acme

(if you have properly set up your URPMI sources http://www.zebulon.org.uk )

and then

start/run/acme

Now you can set the multimedia keys to do what they should do.
