Data dumped to / ? after install of new HD on mandrake 10.0

I installed a new 200GB WD drive on my workstation via the harddrake gui utility a few days back. Setup two partitions: /data /dvd

Formatted the partitions and then proceeded to transfer data via shell with mv *.Z /data... This is about 25GB of data to move from /home.
Transfer seemed to be going smoothly and then had an error disk is full. This is a new partition and should have 135GB free...

df didn't show the filesystem as being mounted... So I mount the new HD... No data ?? Where could it have gone?

repeat df shows that / is 100% used, when previously it had 3GB free. I now assume that data is dumped somewhere in / because hdb was not mounted

I search root partition and then entire disk for any of the files I moved with no matches.

Is there a mechanism that will store the files in a temporary place in / if this happens?

Thanks for suggestions..
