current location for setting desktop prefs in kde4 vs kde 3?

i used to have my desktop set up with a grade from one color to
another. can't find how to do this in kde 4.2.2. the window
brought up by right-clicking the desktop and selecting appearance
only has a single color under the wallpaper heading. didn't that
used to have an option for two colors and a grade between? where
is that now?

thanks,
BabaG

I also miss the ability of making some things, like text

transparent and or opposite to the background colour.

Sorry for the bum steer, There may be a solution....

But I haven't found one.

Regards Glenn

what happened to the kde control center? it's no longer in my menus.
i see something under kde in the installable software list called
'system settings' or 'system settings center' but i don't have anything
like that that i can find in my menus.

Configure your desktop or configure your computer in kde422, it may still be available with kde3 or 3.5.10, but I have not used that for a while.

But I have Mandriva's controls!

someone in #mandriva mentioned that. since 4.2.2 is a complete
rewrite, these things simply may not have been gotten to yet
and might come in a future update.

in the meantime, i was also informed that kcontrol is also
gone. its functionality, or some of it, is now accessed from
the console by typing:

systemsettings

I have been using systemsettings here in place of kcontrol since I started using KDE-4.2.x. With the release of KDE-4.2.2, systemsettings has become as functional as kcontrol (or perhaps more so). The look and feel is different, but many of the applets work the same. systemsettings is the KDE Desktop configuration interface used originally in Kubuntu. It appears that KDE has adopted it as the default configuration interface.

If the menu item (Configure your Desktop) does not exist in the menu (at Tools > System Tools in the menu system), you can add it:
ALT+Click the KDE menu icon
Choose menu editor in the pop-up list
Click the New Item icon in the tool bar (top)
Name the new item Configure your Desktop (the traditional Mandriva name for this function)
In the Command text entry field, enter systemsettings
Save your changes by clicking the Save icon in the tool bar (top)

thanks for that, ernie. i do, in fact have that in my menus
as it turns out. odd thing, though, is that the thing i was
looking for, setting desktop bg color, does not seem to be
in systemsettings. it seems to be separately accessed via a
right-click on the desktop and selecting 'appearance' or
'configure appearance' or something like that.

thanks again,
BabaG

I agree. I would have expected to find the same settings page you discovered in the Appearance Settings on the Alternate-Mouse-Click list duplicated under the Desktop icon in the system settings applet (or possibly under the Appearance icon). Perhaps it is an oversight that will be addresses in a future release . . .
