crash when changing language(keyboard layout) atkbd.c

hello,
first of all congratulations for mandrake 10, i installed it on my thinkpad r40 yesterday, fantastic, everything works, except winmodem and usb floppy, even the thinkpad keys, hibernation, etc... great
BUT> i installed three keyboard layouts for the languages i use frequently, no matter if i click on the icon, or use the keyboard shortcut ctrl-alt-k, the screen gets completly blurry and freezes, nothing happens for a long time, and the only thing to do is shut down brutally with the power off button.
the system logs after startup say> atkbd.c: unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x7a on isa 0060/serio0) and couple of more
atkbd.c: XFree bug, nothing to do with hardware or something like that
i did some googling, found out that this was an old bug on earlier kernel versions, but on those mailinglists i had a glance, it was connected with different syndromes and causes then mine.
i would welcome any suggestions, this is my first real linux distribution, but i was trying knoppix for several months, so bear in mind that i am quite new, thanks in advance and greetings from turkey
