Question Couple Question from a New User

I have recently (as in last night) installed Mandrake 10.1 Official on my frankinstein Dell hybrid box. I have a few questions in regaurds to getting it functional. It is working, but the things that I would like it to do, that it is not are:

1. Recognize the 20GB hd that I have linspire installed on. It dosen't seem to automaicly mount hdab (at least I think thats what the 20GB HD is designated) When I go to the mnt folder only the cd drives and the floppy dirve show up. So how would I go about mounting that drive so that I can gain access to the files stored there. Or is there a way to change the initial boot menu to give me the option to boot in to linspire?

2. I've tried to search these boards for an article on getting the Ipod to work with mandrake, but if someone could lay out some realativly simple steps for what I should I do that would be wonderful. I currently have a 60GB Ipod photo which is Mac formated (HFS+ as I understand it) seeing how I have already hooked it up to a Emac and put some files on it. I have downloaded and installed gtkpod, and have tried a few of the commands the I found in other threads to mount the hfs file system I'm at work now so I don't know the exact code I used but something like

" mount t- hfsplus/sda3 mnt/iPod"

Thanks in advance for any help.

well i try to tell you a few things, even if i'm not very experienced either.

first, i don't have an ipod & i have no clue about how to get it working...so i skip that one.

second, disk labelling:
your first (only ide) hd is called hda, your second hdb, the primary partitions take 1 to 4 & the logical ones 5 to n. so, your linspire partition istn't called hdab for sure. i guess it's hda1 if you used your whole hd for "/" & didn't make a partition for i.e. /home etc.

third, mounting the partition
initially, "adding the partition to the initially boot menu" would cause it to boot linspire. is that what you want?

if not, you maybe want read/write access to it. you'll find the hd linspire is installed on, in /dev/hda1 (if it is hda1). all you have to do is mount it with "mount". i don't use this command often (i have to smbmount everything), so i recommend you to type "man mount", to get the mount help-page which can tell you more about the possible options as i can.

if you want your hd mounted at boot (maybe you meant that by saying "initially boot menu"), you have to create a new entry in /etc/fstab. this is the file which tells mandrake which devices to mount at startup. more options about that with "man fstab".

Well, I just tried Mandrake 10.1, and the first impresion was not really good. It comes with way to much useless sotware and I could not find my windows network. It also did not seem to rec. all my partitions.
I'm gonna try Ubuntu instead.

Is this the second HD installed on your system? If yes, it will be /dev/hdb2. That would indicate it is the second IDE drive on the primary IDE bus. If it is the first IDE drive on the primary IDE bus it would be /dev/hda1.

The third letter indicates:

a = 1st HD on primary bus
b = 2nd DH on primary bus
c = 1st HD on secondary bus
d = 2nd HD on secondary bus

The forth number, 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 are the primary partitions on the drives hda, hdb, hdc and hdd .

If you have 3 parts on hda, they would be hda1, hda5, and hda6.

If you have 3 parts on hdb, they would be hdb2, hdb5, and hdb6.

There are several ways to set it up to mount. With Mandriva, the easiest way is to go to MCC, you will need the root password. Click on Mount Points and start up DiskDrake. There is an icon for DiskDrake. You should see all installed drives. Each should have a tab. There are buttons to create mount points. Once you create a mount point, you should be able to mount the partition.

The alternative way is to use the konsole logged in as root.

You have to create the mount point with the "md" command.

Then you have to edit the fstab file. You have to add an entry for the drive.
Here is a sample of my system. I have two drives, and this is the entry for part 9 on hdb.

Code:
/dev/hdb9 /mnt/mdk10-1 ext3 defaults 1 2
With the MD command I made the directory /mnt/mdk1-1. Then added this to fstab. fstab is in the /etc directory. Hope this helps.

nomass you might find it easier if you go into the Mandrake Control Centre and go to the partitions thing (I think its in Mount Points). You can easily choose the mount locations there, don't be scared by the warning message to 'back up your data first' as there's no danger unless you're doing formatting or repartitioning.

ctkroeker first off why do you think we care, secondly what does that have to do with nomass's problem?
