Continuing problems with Mandriva LE2007 install

Hello

My daughter bought me the 4 Mandriva LE 2007 install cd's for Christmas from Cheapbytes and I had a lot of problems with the install and all the parts/modules working. I am currently running LE2006 on a standard box, 1400 mhz Athlon, 256 megs ram, 40 gigs hard drive. I connect to the internet through a dialup connection (external modem) and I share the internet connection with two WINXP boxes. We really need the shared Internet connection as our small family of three are avid Internet users. Well I tried to install LE 2007, got the distro loaded, setup the modem connection to the Internet and that worked fine. I then tried to do the internet sharing thing, linking my modem to the ethernet card which is connected to a hub along with the other two computers. LE2007 kept coming back saying that there was no ethernet card installed. I went to the hardware section in MCC and re-installed the card, went back to my internet sharing setup and now the install tells me that i need the package bind ? but I can't install it ? What a piece of crap. I went to another company online (OSDisc.com), bought the same cd's and had the same problem. I had to re-install LE2006 as we need our internet connections.

I am so ticked off that I am looking for another distro. If any of you have any ideas, please let me know

It is sad that you paid money for such an experience. mandriva has repositories for software not included with the install disks. The mandriva club can be very helpful: http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/view/Main/

You need bind to run a DHCP server (I suspect), though you could have set up a static network instead... then it is just a matter of IP forwarding with iptables.

However, the more complete distros will come with everything you need out of the box. So you are looking for things like fedora core 6 and openSUSE 10.2. Look for cover disks on magazines or use an internet cafe to download the isos.

Maybe try 2007.1 when out (from a cover magazine)

Sorry we cannot help more if 2007 is uninstalled

This is very strange, because linux is very good at detecting ethernet cards usually.
Oh dear...

Maybe try PClinuxOS (mandriva based)
