Connecting with a modem under Mandrake 10.1
How's this for a noob question?
I have Mandrake 10.1 with a Smartlink 56K modem. I've downloaded the drivers from Smartlink's site, compiled them, installed them, set up my modem in the control panel as well as my ISP, but does anyone know how to connect without using KPPP (which appears to use settings completely unrelated to the main Mandrake Control Panel)? Ta muchly, J |
hey kppp is very easy
just add a account ,with the phone no, account details etc etc and ur modem(/dev/modem etc) and either use control panel or use kppp regards |

I did try that, both in kppp and the main Mandrake control panel, but different problems pop up. With the main control panel, I enter all the details as usual, and try to save them, but when I click on OK, close the panel and then try to connect, it claims that there is no internet connection setup. Sure enough, the settings don't appear to have been saved. With kppp, I enter all the details and it dials up OK, but halfway through connection it cuts off and constantly redials. Besides, I'm aware that there have been problems that konqueror, evolution etc. don't react well to dialup connections made through kppp. |
In KPPP, try increasing the "pppd timeout:" Mine is set to 30 seconds but you may need more.
This is on e of the reasons it could be redialling because it's not getting enough time to make the connection. Increasing this setting will allow more time for the connection to be made. In my experience with Konq and KPPP there have been no probs at all. Not saying that no one else has had problems just that i haven't. Once you get it set right, you shouldn't have any problems at all,............as i said it works really well for me. Oh, you will find the pppd timeout setting under the "misc tab in the configuration section of KPPP Cheers:D |
i too haven't faced problem with kppp and i have been using it for quite some time

I am also having trouble connecting to the internet via a modem under Mandrake 10.1 using kppp. I have a conexant hsf modem which worked fine with Mandrake 9.1. The new conexant driver seems to work - the modem dials and connects, yet no traffic flows. Setting up a new connection in the control panel also appears to be fine. I recall from 9.1 that I could specify the modem as the default connection unless an ethernet connection was present - I can't find this on 10.1.
I will inform the conexant people as well, but I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me if I need to do something else. Thanks, |
hi there
post the contents of ur /etc/resolv.conf and O/P of route -n regards |
Thank you masand,
Disabling the hotplug worked in the end. I shall go and click on the `thanks` button. Stroller |
thanks
this hotplug option has been a problem with mandrake coz we are not used to it regards |
Stroller,
I have the same problem as you: The new conexant driver seems to work - the modem dials and connects, yet no traffic flows. Setting up a new connection in the control panel also appears to be fine. Except I use the smlink driver. Everything seems to set up fine, the modem dials and connects and in KPPP reports baud rates at 49k, but every time I try to go to a web site it just says, "looking for www.whatever.com and times out. How did you disable the hotplug? |
