./configure missing !!!????

I'm trying to install Mozilla. I've downloaded the .tgz file and unpacked it to a directory.

I've then CDed to that dir and typed ./configure it replies:

bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

Now I'm lost as I was following these instrction out of a magazine (LinuxFormat)

Do I need to install something extra to be able to compile progs?

I'm a newbie at Linux so be gentle!

I'm using Mandrake 9.2

Thanks

Jonathan

When ever you install a tarball you need to read the README file. This can be accomplished by clicking on the tarball in your window manager like Konqouer, or by CDing into the tarball and typing vi README

Mozilla uses ./mozilla-installer instead of ./configure.

hope that helps

If tar-balls are tricky, just stick to the rpm packages. Rpmfind, mandrake cooker or just urpmi (http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon). All installed at once.

The problem I see with RPM's is that you don't get specific stuff compiled on the fly. For example for XP instructions if supported, 686 architecture, etc... but I agree that rpm's are good because they're easier although I prefer tar's now.
