Conexant HCF modem
I'm thinking of getting a Mandrake distro (messed around with 8.0 time ago and liked it) but before I get it I'd like to know if there's anybody using a COnexant HCF modem on any Mandrake distro and what driver they use. (I know it works - worked for me when I tried - but lost the driver)

I have 4 words for you.
External serial port modem. They are real, they work and don't fill your log with error messages. They want money for the Linux driver, so put your money into something worth it. If you dual boot with Windows, it will work better in that as well. I know, I know, but my internet usage is very low and no heavy downloading, and it's working fine for me iunder windows. I'd like to change over to Linux, but I want to see how everything works first and the less I have to spend on getting an idea the better.
And since I know it is possible... |
As long as you have more time than money and enjoy poor performance, I guess that's OK, but I certainly don't recommend it. It's your call, but I know it isn't worth spending money for a Linux winmodem driver. I understand their "free" driver only gives slow connections.
Don't check out Gentoo with it as it would be 5-6 days downloading the basic system. I use the internet a lot, download and try tons of stuff as there are so many exciting things to try in Linux, myself. Keep /var/log cleaned out as it will make very large messages files with it's errors. |
Get a router listen to sound advice.
If you have a router you can reboot, switch mahines, switch operting systems and your net will be always on and no time wasting conection problems. On the other hand you can give over your precious machine code to work a cheap chip and then even pay for the privilege. Of course you won't you just have to try it the hard way. |
I appreciate your concern guys, but I'm still on a pay-as-you-go system and getting a router... that would mean paying up to 40 euros a month for my internet connection. OK, I'd be able to download anything I like, but it simply doesn't pay off for me at this time. I need a simple sollution to a minor problem and that's all
BTW, there's thread on COnexant drivers and yes, the free one offered by linuxant is slow, but there are also some free (older) drivers still around and they work fine, and at a 'good' speed. |

Fine, but my WInmodem doesn't give ma any headaches under Windows and before I go and spend money on something I do not need now, I'd like to see if it's worth spending money on for a linux distro. If, and only if I'm convinced that things go more or less the way I like I might consider buying a new piece of hardare in order to optimise performance (no cpu usage etc.)
So now back to the question: anyone? |

Thanks. great info on the link (read part) Second part of my question is: which MDK distro nr has kernel 2.4.x Does MDK10 come with 2.6 only or also with 2.4?

mandrake 10 comes with kernel 2.6 , but if u want kernel 2.4 then pclinuxos is ur ticket
