Computer freezes when I click on Configure your computer

I finally took the plunge into linux and did away with windows on my desktop. Its an AMD +1800 processor and i installed Mandrake 10.1 linux. But I have been running into problems ever since.
1) During installation the computer would hang when bootloader installation was taking place.
2) After retrying many times, when finally Mandrake was installed, the computer freezes when I click on "Configure your computer" and Mandrake Control Center opens. After that the computer wont even shut of. ( CTL+ATL+DEL--> Turn of computer) Upon selection of the verbose mode, I found that the cursor just blinks when it comes to shutting down the alsa.
3) Initially I thought it might have been a problem with the LILO bootloader, so I selected GRUB from the menu, where it asks to configure the bootloader...but the problem has not been solved.
I would be grateful for any replies.

Thanx

Grub runs on top, you need a working lilo for grub to operate, it's probably not at fault.

acpi=off I think is what you need to add to the boot line.

Check the documentation and/or search these pages for a post like yours.

The search function on LQ has been updated and is much better and faster than it used to be.

Just a hint, always search before posting. And after posting check the similar threads at the bottom of the page.

If you don't know how to add to the command line for the boot process, remember Google is your friend.

But I think you'll find that a newer version of mandriva will fix the problem for your mother board.

Cheers......
