Are you trying to update to Gnome 2.6 ?

I'm guessing you are, if so there is a little more involved than just compiling.

If you want to update from rpms and replace Gnome 2.4 with 2.6 you could try using Cooker rpms. They should be there by now and should work with 10.0.

If you want to have both 2.4 and 2.6 installed you can compile 2.6 from source and add a new user who gets Gnome 2.6. This approach requires a little explanation so let us know what your trying to do.

I just want to compile programs that require the gtk libs and so forth. But i cant do that since pkg-config is complaining about how it cant find them when they are installed.

I downloaded gaim and tried the ./configure on my fresh install of Mandrake 10.0. It failed because the '-devel' rpm for gtk+ wasn't installed. This was pretty silly because I'd specified development when I did the install.

I then did :
rpm -ivh libatk1.0_0-devel-1.4.1-1mdk.i586.rpm
rpm -ivh libgdk_pixbuf2.0_0-devel-2.2.4-9mdk.i586.rpm
rpm -ivh libpango1.0_0-devel-1.2.5-3mdk.i586.rpm libgtk+2.0_0-devel-2.2.4-9mdk.i586.rpm

the ./configure worked fine after that, so did the make

You might want to do

urpmi libgtk+2.0_0-devel

instead

Try that and see if things start compiling OK

I tried what you suggested which was to use "urpmi libgtk+2.0_0-devel" So far it installed ok and when i go to compile an application it seems to work correctly. NOt sure why it was not working before, i installed gtk kit from the distro cds and it also siad it was going to install its dependcies. But using the command urpmi libgtk+2.0_0-devel worked knock on wood. The interesting thing was urpmi installed the gtk devel kit from one of my sources for the gnome 2.6 release. Is the gtk+ devel libs on the distro cd or are they an older release?
