compiling module-init-tools-0.9.14

Hi all
Just aquick question

I am trying to compile kernel 2.6.5
I am using mdk 9.2 2.4.22-18mdk

when I run the module_install I get a message I need modul-init-tools
So I download the the source tarball - when I hit the make command it sends me an error /usr/bin/ld can't find lc and then exits

I read somewhere that init tools replaces modutils in kernels 2.5 and above

Is this the reason why I can't install the module?
Do I really need init-tools to compile 2.6.5 kernel?
Do I need to be running a 2.5/6 kernel before 2.6.5?

I am sorry if these questions have already been answered elsewhere in another thread - please redirect me.

Thanks in advance

Thames

No, you don't need to install module-init-tools to compile a 2.6 kernel. You will need them if you want to load a module into a 2.6 kernel, but it's probably possible to build a kernel with no modules, everything built into the kernel. I only use one module, the Nvidia driver for my graphics card. The reason you can't compile module-init-tools is the reason it gave you - it can't find lc, which probably means you haven't installed it of the Mandrake CD's. It's part of the glibc-static-devel package (I forget the exact name) http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...cannot-find-lc

Thanks for the info guys

Unfortunately I have opted for plenty of modules in my config.

Many options with menuconfig seem to be module only ie a message appears saying the function is too large to be in the kernel.

I'll try using the rpm package instead.

Thanks alot

Going from 2.4 to 2.6 kernel requires alot of tool upgrades..

There is good documenation at www.kerneltrap.org

The best way in Mandrake is to use drakeconf... and with anyluck it will automatically download the required dependancies.. (if 2.6.5 is a stable Mandrake rpm yet)

If 2.4.xx works fine for you don't upgrade to 2.6 yet...

A word to the wise... If you are just compiling it from source ... www.kernel.org and not using the src rpms from Mandrake... your system will be messy....

Many of the conveniences of Mandrake will not work correctly, your fstab file may not be configured correctly any more etc...

Cheers,

Gary
