cd player KsCD/xine
 

Hi everyone! I was just wondering why the only app willing to play my audio cds was xine ...

xmms + KsCD won't work at all. No sound but i see the time on the track rolling.. even the track titles...

Not hardware related obviously since xine works well with cds and mp3s/videos sound very good on mplayer,xmms,etc.

First time ever i install linux on my computer (mdk 10) and i'm beginning to like it A LOT even though my computer skills are lacking. Actually quite a lot easier than i thought. But i would really appreciate the help.

(also, I'm sure i'll find it somewhere else if i set my mind on it... but how do you make shortcuts (icons in the menu or on desktop) for apps I usually can start only through Konsole's ./appname ?)

Audio CD's play in xmms when the CD-ROM is read as a raw device. You must
have a cable running from the drive to your sound card, and then in xmms
preferences you should configure the Audio I/O Plugins "CD Audio Player" for
your approprate device and directory. And on my system I have to use the
Digital audio extraction Play mode. After that's setup, you can just pop a CD in
the proper device and press the Play > on xmms. (I'm playing one now.)

As for creating icons on the desktop, it usually depends upon which window
manager/desktop environment you use. If it's KDE I think you can just right-click
on the desktop then choose Create New > and for creating menu icons you
right-click on the K where the typical Start button would be and choose Menu
Editor then navigate to the app which needs the icon, and to the right of it's
name will be an icon and you click on that and get a Select Icon - KDE Menu
Editor dialog box. Then you'll need to choose one in the window below that
which is provided because the radio button beside System icons is checked;
or check the button for Other icons and navigate to what you want to use.

For example, on a computer that I've installed Slack-10.0 for someone I've
added Mozilla Firefox-0.9.1 and it needed an icon. So from where I told you
I navigated to /home/jason/firefox/icons/ and chose mozicon50.xpm then
selected OK then at the menu selected Save and then Quit. To put that icon
on the toolbar at the bottom of the desktop you would right-click the toolbar
and choose Add > Application Button > and navigate to it from the menu that
pops up.

I use Fluxbox and have no icons - just my particular taste. So forgive me if
these instructions aren't what you wanted, or are too verbose.

Well, for starters, do you have cdparanoia-plugin installed?

With kscd, I believe you do need a audio cable going from your cd/dvd/cdrw-rom to your motherboard/sound card, since it doesn't use digital extraction(?).

Another thing you can check, is where the cd-rom device is set at. For kscd: Extras pull-down menu -> Configure KSCD -> CD-Rom Device. For xmms: Ctrl+P -> Under Audio I/O Plugins, Input Plugins, select CD Audio Player and click on Configure. Check where the device and directory is set at.

For xmms and kscd, I use my dvd-rom (/dev/hdg /mnt/cdrom2) to play cds and from the initial install, it was set to /dev/cdrom, where it's actually at /dev/cdrom1.
