My system won't play CDs (original audio cd's or burned audio cds). Hardrake recognises that my cd-rom and cd-rw drives are there, but when I insert a cd, KsCD automatically starts and looks as if its playing the track but the cd-rom drive light just flashes on/off at regular intervals and no music comes out my speakers.
I am using Mandriva 10.1. I have a CREATIVE CD5233E cd-rom and a LG CD-RW CED-8080B. Can anyone help?
2. does mandriva play the little sound when the system boots?
I'm thinking it could be your sound card, but mandriva usually gets it right. Also, check to make sure that your volume isn't muted. I think there is somewhere in configuration where you can play a test sound. Try to do that to make sure sound card is working.
Mandriva does play a little tune when I boot it up
My souncard is quite old - a soundblaster 5.1 live drive IR. You may be on to something with the soundcard because when I plug my guitar into one of the soundcards line-in ports I can't get sound out the speakers, but if I boot my dual-boot PC into Windows I get the sound from my guitar no problem. If I get any more info that may be useful I'll post it here when I can. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

We have a winner!!! I bet that is the problem.
The thing I read about is that KsCD does not support digital playing from CD, whereas Microsoft Windows does. So you need to make sure your audio cable from the CD/DVD is plugged into your sound card.
and also check your Kmix settings as one of the channel could be disabled.

Wow, I guess they improved KsCD because it wouldn't work back in the Mandrake days. Well that's good to know that it supports audio without having the audio cable plugged in.
