Unhappy CD burner:- Sony CD-RWCRX300E

Got a new PC with Mdk 9.1 pre-installed.. looked really good BUT
trying to burn a CD hung the machine. Reset and now cannot start X. Sob!
Question:- is this burner supported (I presumed it was as it was a new bundle)?
Question:- I don't understand how supermount should work. Is there any way to unmount a CD from the command- line? (I tried to kill the CD-R program but just got seg faults on running top. I was going to try cdrecord but the SCSI ID LUN etc returned seemed different to that from the Mandrake hardware wizard).
There is a boot disk and CD-ROMS supplied with the machine to restore it to factory condition, but I feel confused by this multi-function drive and the strange entries in fstab.
All suggestions as to what should really be there appreciated before I have to wipe the hard drive.
