Try typing in thunderbird to a console (after cd'ing into it's directory). Do you get any error messages?

If you type "thunderbird" as root (su + password) does the program start? You may have installed it as root. My executable is in ~/thunderbird/thunderbird.

Perhaps you need to change the permissions on the executable file

How did you install Thunderbird?
