The md5sum program runs the iso file, bit by bit, through a process that computes a string such as you see in the md5sums.91.asc or similar text file that is usually made available in the same directory on the mirror where you download the isos. This string is virtually unique for the combination of bits that are in that file. So, if you run this same process on your downloaded iso file and you get the exact same string, you can be virtually certain that you have the same, uncorrupted file. Otherwise, it makes no sense to use it.

Hey i agree with Iain i got madrake 9.1 off ebay and I am total newbie and it installed without a problem in under a half hour.for 5.99 save the hassle of three day downloads unless you enjoy the waiting lol. But problem MANDRAKE DOESNT LIKE MY MODEM.
I have a old external standard modem might that work? If not I am getting dsl this week so maybe point will be moot. any ideas suggestions.

Small suggestion

Check your BIOS and make sure plug n play OS is disabled. I had the exact problem once and that was part of the problem. The rest was I removed all cards except the video.

Hope it works.

BTW, you can get copies cheap from www.cheapbytes.com. I paid $12.00USA.

Question One more time please

Try one more time and give as much detail as you can. There's something wrong somewhere. Also put a link to where you downloaded the files from. Maybe you got the wrong version, like the one for mac's. A file name would be good.

Running out of ideas. I've never seen Mandrake this stubborn before.

DSL I hope?

Try downloading just the first CD from here:
http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3#iso

You need the one called "Mandrake Linux 9.1 ISO images mirrors for i586 and higher". Just pick the mirror that's closest to you.

This is either a harware problem that we're missing or there is a bad file somewhere and check sum is not catching it. The name for CD 1 is Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso. The 'inst' is what makes the difference.

I'm running out of ideas. It's one of the two above. Just don't know which.

Post back.

You can read/write fat32 from linux, read ntfs. Write for ntfs is still beta and can corrupt your files.

Yes, I can download files in Mandrake to my Win98 desktop, reboot to Windows, and execute the file. Or, I can create a bmp or jpeg with my scanner in W98, reboot to Mandrake, and use the graphic in linux, for example.

When you install Mandrake to a box with Windows already installed, the installer will set up a mount point (directory) and put an entry in /etc/fstab so that the Windows partition is mounted (and readable) at each boot. That entry in my fstab looks like this:

/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

You should read the manual by typing man fstab in the terminal and there is a site with info about fstab here: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/admin/amount2.html

When you install Windows after Mandrake (or anything else) is installed, Windows will overwrite the master boot record, not giving you the option to boot Mandrake. You should make a bootdisk, so you could always boot Mandrake from the floppy. You can also boot CD1, press F1, type rescue, and choose to reinstall the bootloader from there. There is info about that here: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/admin/arecov.html#mdk
