CanoScan N650U doesn't work

I'm having the hardest time getting my scanner to work under Linux using SANE (that's about the most inapproprate name I've seen given to something oin a long time!)

If I run sane-find-scanner, it gives me this (as either root or a user):

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x2206 [CanoScan], chip=LM9832/3) at libusb:004:008

It gives me that every time (the USB location changes if I replug, but that's not really relevent to this problem).

However, here's the fun part: The scanner only responses correctly to the very first query or instruction that it receives. For example, I go to a console directly after booting up (not running anything that would look for or use the scanner) and type 'scanimage -L', I'll get something like this: (this happens for both root and a normal user)

device `plustek:libusb:004:008' is a Canon N650U/N656U USB flatbed scanner

However, it I immediately run it again this is what I get:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Likewise, if you open xsane before running anything else, it will load up and when you tell it to scan, it will say that it had an I/O error. I close xsane and try to load it up again, and it complains that you don't have a scanner and closes the program.

This also holds true for scandrake. The first time you run it, it will find your scanner (assuming you haven't run scanimage or xsane or anything else that touches the scanner), but if you run it again, it won't find a scanner.

I know I had this scanner working under Linux before, but that was a while back. I've had thisproblem with both Mandrive Limited Edition 2005 and Mandriva 2006.

I really don't want to have to dual-boot to run my scanner. Especially if it supported by SANE (which it is under the Plustek driver.)

Here's the dmesg output I get when I replug the device:

usb 4-1.4: USB disconnect, address 8
usb 4-1.4: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9

Here is my /proc/bus/usb/devices (just the scanner info)
