canon mpc190 on 10.1

Just installed the download version of mandrake 10.1, most things have installed ok I have no sound but thats probably just something minor.

What my main question is , is that I have a canon multifunction Image class MPC190 which translates to linux hated. It didn't work as expected but to my surprise it was detected as the MPC190 (a first) it listed the following info:

Bus PCI #3
PCI Device #4
Device ID 9781

Module: Unknown

I recently read that it may be the udev system or specifically the fdi files - would this be right? any clues how to get it to work?

And as a general question do other makes of multifunctions work on linux or is it just canon with the problems?

Is there any extra info I could supply that would help?
