Well, in *nix the password is not echoed to the screen. So just enter the password slowly and correctly and hit enter. It's done that way for security. Hope that helps.

You should be able to configure the standard drivers for you nvidia card using XFdrake as root. So:

# XFdrake

will open up the X server setup interface. You'll be able to select your vid card and so on here.
