I've just update to Kde 3.4.0 on my LE2005. It worked great but when I rebooted my computer, I can not loign. It stops at the lon in window (where to inter username and password). I click on login, the screen turns to black then reappaires, but it stays at the same place, it akes again to inter the username and password. Also the keyboard doesn't workvery well, sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. The mouse is ok. What can I do to correct the problem?
you're describing the same problem with 10.1 and kde 3.3. i installed 10.1 via mini-install and then had a cd 4 and used that to install 3.3 before. the keyboard dies right. lol for me back then the only solution was to use mdkkdm or another login manager. if 3.4 is working for you then use gdm.
ckota I am curious how did you install kde 3.4, because I have done the same thing via urpmi from the cooker repos, and I then tested it, fixed any errors, and turned off the computer. After turning the computer back on I am able to login and kde starts normally without any errors, visual ones...
I installed it from Tha's site. I added his site to the urpmi and I used the commande 'urpmi --auto-select' in konsole as root.
Now I can login but not directely. I change the runlevel from 5 to 3, then I start the startx. It appears unusual but I can not manage to login by another way.
webterractive, can you please tell me in detail how did you install Kde3.4 because I'm new to Linux.
I had this problem too. Assuming your using 10.2 What I did was to:
All text in quotes are commands
1. Log into root.
2. Open a shell.
3. Type in "urpmi.addmedia thacs http://rpm.nyvalls.se/10.2/RPMS with hdlist.cz"
4. "rpmdrake-remove" Search on kde and remove all kde rpms.
5. "rpmdrake" Now do a search on thac
6. Select the kde stuff.
7 Install.
When updating 3.3 to 3.4 I got a lot of conflicts preventing some rpms of kde3.4 from being installed and getting the same problem your experiencing. By removing 3.3 first I by-passed this problem. After reboot everything work like it should. With the 3.4kde kdm working fine.
there was an extensive thread discussing this "operation" in mandrake 10.1 and the Thacs repositories to upgrade to kde 3.4 (. I do not want to sound harsh buddy but if you had search you would had found out that this is a common problem when you use that repository to upgrade. there is a reason why kde 3.4 was not included in mandriva 2005. as a matter of fact kde 3.3 was not even supported on mandrake 10.1. because of all the dependiecies and those take time to iron out, specially between kde and the OS.
Bottom line: the logon issue is caused by using the wrong display manager (MDM). switch to another dm (kdm or xdm). also you will find out that after the upgrade menudrake does nto work.
You should install the 3.4 packages from the cooker repos. Just use the update_source and work backwards with your browser until you hit the devel folder and then choose cooker. Add the media to your urpmi and then install it. You can also try this work around for not being able to login automatically. Change your login screen to something normal, don't use a the mandrakelinux theme. Its in the kdm config file, there will be a line that says use theme=1 change it to 0. I did that before rebooting and I haven't had a problem. Try the work around first. Then you can try the other.
I had NO Problems using thac's rpm using the steps I posted. I'm able to use the kde-kdm login manager with no problems. As a matter of fact I've installed 10 machines (so far & I have 5 more to do this week) all with 10.2LE all with KDE3.4.
