Unhappy Cannot get Mandrake 9.2 to load after installation

I finally received my copy of Mandrake 9.2 Discovery today. I rushed home to install it on my desktop PC running:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2.0GHz
512 MB DDR Memory
128 MB ATI Radeon 9600 (Mandrake 9.2 certified graphics card)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
52x24x52/16 Samsung CD-RW/DVD

This system more than meets the minimum requirements. The installation went through perfectly. ALL of my hardware was detected CORRECTLY and the installation completed within 10 minutes. I rebooted my PC to enjoy the wonderful life of Mandrake 9.2 and forget about the blasted monopoly of Microcrap. The kernel initialized and all devices were working properly. My anticipation was building (I had a celebration in the works). The next step is the login screen.....waiting.......black screen.........10 minutes later...........black screen.........go get food............return.........black screen.........no login.........AAAARRRRGGGGG!!! Right before the login screen appears, the screen goes black. What do I do? What is the problem? I am pretty familiar with Linux, so I can make my way around in it. I just need a good step-by-step approach. Thank you for any help!

Billy

This may not be the answer...but on one of my installs of MDK 9.2 powerpak .. i made the mistake of installing drivers for my cable modem and for the onboard ethernet card that it would be attached to...but since i wasn't ready to install it i didn't plug it in....the boot up stalled when it went to check out the ethernet connection....if this sounds familiar.. go back into internet connections and disable the lan connection...just leave the modem connection...for me...it stopped the stall...

Good Luck
Tom

Thanks for the advice. However, I do not have a modem on this computer, nor is it connected to the internet in any way. I only have the On-board NIC that came with the mainboard. So, that may not be the problem. Thanks anyways. I'm still looking for an answer to the original problem.

This might be a problem with the video drivers. Try switching to console by pressing ctrl-alt-f2 (or ctrl-alt-f3) and see if you get a login prompt.

If you do get a login prompt, login type startx, if it fails try another console (ctrl-alt-f4) and this time login as root and type XF86Config to change your video settings.

Let us know if it worked or not.

No. That did not work. Still have a black screen. Maybe I could try re-installing Mandrake 9.2, but with 3D acceleration disabled or with a different video driver. If it works, can't you always go back and re-enable it? Thanks for the help!

HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!!! PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!!

I finally got it to work. There was an option in the installation that I missed. It actually tests the display right there in the installation. After the test, it set the right display, but without 3D acceleration. Thanks for the help!
