Cannot access mandriva installation disc in your cdrom drive
 

When I try to install Mandriva Linux 10.2 (Limited Edition 2005) on my old system, I get the standard press <Enter> to install, and I do. It does its thing for a while, and then i get the message "I can't access a Mandrakelinux Installation disc in your CDROM drive (CREATIVECD3630E). Retry" with the optoins of yes, no, and back. I have tried over and over to install this. Thanks for any help. I am running a:
Pentium 2 333mhz (i think it is 333, maybe 266?)
4gb hard drive,
three 32mb ram sticks,
Creative CD 36x MX Drive
I have an lan card
Some crappy old graphics card (PCI i believe)
It is a Dell Dimension XPS D266
It has a blank hard drive formatted into two partitions which are FAT32. One partition is 1.5GB, and the other is 2.5GB.

A similar Q came up recently somewhere else in the forum
and while there are all sorts of possibilities

with a CD drive that old ( 36x ) it may not read 700 meg Cd roms and may be limited to the older standard of 650 meg
if all else fails, consider a modern CD or DVD drive
I would recommend a DVD drive as that will widen your scope of media and the price diff between a CD and DVD player is pretty minimal
( here in Australia its about $ 10 - 20 difference )
another point to consider is that the laser in the drive might be on its last legs as well, another reason to moderize the drive

just another point
you are a little short of RAM, so dont expect KDE or Gnome to whizz
you might consider a gui a little lighter like fluxbox etc

This computer is so old, I don't want to invest in it. I actually aquired this for 15$. So i might just temporarily borrow a cd-rom drive from another computer. Thanks for the suggestion. It is just that the installed does load, but then when it tries to actually start the installation process it can't read. But it is reading the CD to give me the Linux splash of options, and it is in a linux splash that i get the error.
