Cannnot connect to /dev/video0/

My webcam (Creative Labs CT6840 USB Video Blaster WebCam III) has its little green light on which means to me that the modules are loaded. The problem is that when I open up xawtv I get this:

[root@inchair]# xawtv
This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.11-6mdksmp)
can't open /dev/video0: No such device
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device
v4l: open /dev/video0: No such device
no video grabber device available

When I open Camorama I get this message:
Error (camorama)
Could not connect to video device (/dev/video0/).
Please check connection.

When I do a mount /dev/video0/
I get this:
mount: can't find /dev/v4l/video0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

Another problem I'm having is that my nics (eth0 and eth1) don't work unless I activate them after boot but that may be another problem for another time.

This is a copy of my /etc/fstab/:

# This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details
/dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdb6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0022,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0
/dev/hdd1 /mnt/windows ntfs umask=0022,nls=iso8859-1,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda /mnt/floppy1 auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

I tried to post the output from dmesg but I get this error:

"You have included too many images in your signature or in your previous post. Please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.

Images include use of smilies, the vB code [img] tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator."

what does an 'ls -l' give you on /dev/video0?

I don't think you need to worry about mounting you webcam in
fstab unless your webcam has memory for storing pictures. I
don't keep up with the latest features in hardware anymore
so I don't even know if webcams come with that feature.

Your NIC problem sounds like it could be solved by loading
the drivers in /etc/modules.conf.

Hi, I got hte same problem with my web camera. I found this and it seems that the ov511 driver is broken in kernel 2.6.11. I've compiled with the patch file but still have some problems.

Right now I've more problems after upgrade, my CUPS isn't working anymore, so that takes all the time.

cheers, tord
