Hello i have installed Mandrake on my other pc and when i first booted i had to do the "first config" thingo and then it just went into a wallpaper with blue and a wave up the top and a wave down the bottom
like its not a wave as in beach i mean wave as in curve...
i can boot up but i cant open any programs.. its my first time with nix and all i install it, then when it says remove disks and restart then i do that and it comes up with first time configuration and i choose my desktop and all and no mail client then in says finish, i click finish it loads into this "wall paper" screen and just will flicker with white boxes appearing then disappearing and the start bar appears for like 2 seconds then goes..
lemme go make this image now..lol
Its slightly different to the image, like the colors arnt the same, size is different, but its shades of blue and yeah, looks similar.. i dunno wat to do i dunno if this is a "special Screen"?
i can open it up in text mode like the
Localhost login:
password:
the sumthing like [benjamin 2 localhost]$
or sumthing but i dont no n e other commands other than startx
well the wall paper changed to a just plain blue bg and a dialogue box has appeared reading
"Could Not Start Process: Unable to Create io-slave: Too Many Open Files" well is there a way i can close some files down or sumthing, well i just figurerd i can right mouse button, but i cant open the desktop config
I am unsure of my Moniter Model, My Graphic Card Size, and wat the graphics card (brand, name, model?)
Im Trying To Run Mandrake 9.1
PLEASE HELP

Not sure what the problem is but if you could find out anything about your graphics card it would help a lot. Another thing to do is post the contents of your XF86Config file here. To do that do this:
1. Log into 'text mode'. This is called the command line.
2. Type this exactly 'cp /etc/X11/XF86Config ~' Linux is case-sensitive so make sure the X's are capitalized as well as whatever else needs to be. The ~ is a tilde and is right next to the '1' on your keyboard.
3. Now mount a floppy disk. Type, as root, 'mount -t auto /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy'.
4. Now copy XF86Config to the floppy: 'cp XF86Config /mnt/floppy'
5. Unmount the floppy: 'umount /mnt/floppy'
6. Now look at XF86Config in Windows using Notepad or some other editor and post the contents here.
If /mnt/floppy doesn't work then type 'ls -l /mnt/' and if you see anything that looks like floppy you can substitue that for /mnt/floppy.
sorry it wouldnt let me cp to the floppy it was asing if i wanted to overite the XF86Config.. well maybe it would be better if i get help installing, or go through a guide or something, cause i just dont know wat to do..
Did it let you mount the floppy? If so have you tried looking at the floppy in Windows? I'm guessing you copied XF86Config over to the floppy correctly and maybe tried copying it again.
I understand. Linux does have a high learning curve, but if you stick with it you find it feels really natural eventually. What you might want to do is try switching distros. I would recommend Slackware but that can be tough for a beginning Linux user. Maybe try Fedora or SUSE. You could also checkout CollegeLinux. I've never used it but it's Slackware based and tries to do more automatic hardware detection that Slackware.
If you have a broadband connection it is feasible to download the ISOs. They are provided for free on Fedora's and Slackware's sites. SUSE takes a different approach and offers a free install over ftp. If downloading is still not an option then I guess trying a reinstall is the best. When you installed Mandrake the first time did you install everything? That's probably the best way for a beginning Linux user. After you get more comfortable you can see what packages you don't use and remove them. It's been awhile since I've used Mandrake so unfortunately I won't be of much help guiding you through the install but I can try. Just make sure you read everything during the install as that can give you clues as to what to do. Unfortunately installation is still a hard spot for Linux beginners; it's getting better but it still has a way to go. I can only reiterate: take it slow during the install, read everything, and install everything. If you have any questions during the install just post them here.
hey im back the installation finished, i went through first config and stuff agian this tiem setting up mail server.. it then done its think then a like clipboard icon really small like 16by16 pixles come up down the right corner and then redisapeard i found out some stuff about me graphics card

By the sound of it. It sounds you have graphics but different problem. Almost like a permission problem with your home directory. Did you try logging into root to see if the same thing happens? If it dosn't respond back and I'll tell you how to fix that. If it does let's take the next step. Don't switch distros because of one little snag. If you were to switch distros evey time you ran into a little snag you'll never get to know the joys of running Linux
ok then lol, umm to login as root i press ctrl+alt+bksp? yes well did that logged in at thats wat made the 2 little icons apear in the corner.. Like a clipboard with a k.. and a spread sheet type thing, tiny 16 by 16 icons- -NO start bar.. or other icons..
So your loggin into root to begen with uh? root is setup to be limited with no desktop icons and no easy way to put them their. Log out and log into a users account what do you get then?
