Can't find Mandriva 2007 kernel source

In order to install NVIDIA driver, I know I have to install the kernel source.

When I was running Mandrake 10.1, I found the correct package on the distros CD, but now for Mandriva 2007 free I cannot find them on the CD.

Wher do I find them? Or is there some way to install NVIDIA drivers without the kernel source?

"uname -r" returns me " 2.6.17-5mdv"

The current kernel for Mandriva 2007.0 is "2.6.17-8mdv". You can get the updated kernel and the kernel source packages at the 'updates' or 'main updates' source you have set up for your system.

If you have not set up any update sources for your system, you should. Use of the update functionality of the package manager is the easiest way to manage and install security patches and bug fixes provided by Mandriva.

To configure updates (An Internet connection is required):

Open the Package Manager (System / Configuration / Packaging / Install Remove & Update Software).

Click the 'Options' Menu and select 'Media manager'.

Click the 'Add' button in the menu at the right.

Click 'Official Updates'.

Click 'Yes'.

You will be presented with a list of available ftp mirrors. Select one in your geographical area, then click 'OK'.

Media manager will download the hdlist.cz file for the media source and set up the Update source you have selected.

Click 'OK' to close Media Manager.

Close the package manager.

Open the package manager again.

Click the left button in the tool bar just above the category tree pane (left) and select 'All Updates'. You should now be able to install any available updates for your system.

Best results are obtained with a broadband connection. If you have a dial up connection, you may wish to select a few updates at a time. When I used dial up, I estimated about 5 minutes per Megabyte for download time.

To update your system kernel, read the official directions here.

HTH,

I set up the mirrors with the good old "easy urpmi" and I found the packages for my kernel-source on repository. On the other end, I did not find sources for 2.6.17-8, so right now I am sticking to -5.

It seems strange to me that the kernel-source rpm should not be on any of the four installation CDs...

Ok, sorry. Now I got it and updated correctly to kernel -8.

In particular, thank you to ernie, because with my usual procedure (easyurpmi.zarb.org) I would never have gotten the "official updates".

Now, discussing updates... There are so many that it is difficult to choose. Is there a way to just say "update everything"? Or is there a way to choose rationally between the hundreds of packages available (for example, some way to monitor which package have been often/seldom/never used)?

The package manager should display only the updates for packages which are already installed on your system. There are currently 691 update packages residing in the 'updates' directory on the mirror I use. I have installed the 'old_rpmdrake' package because I prefer Mandriva Update to the new Package Manager. With it, I can click a check box to choose all updates and start the process while doing other non-computer related tasks. This works well for me because I have an 'always-on' broadband connection rated at 5mbps. YMMV.

If you use dial-up, you will have a better time choosing a few updates at a time. When I used dial-up, I estimated about 5 minutes per MB download time.

"It seems strange to me that the kernel-source rpm should not be on any of the four installation CDs..."

I'll say! The first thing I used to do when installing new versions of Mandriva was to restore my MadWiFi driver. But since the kernel source wasn't on the installation disk, I couldn't build it and get on the internet TO GET THE KERNEL SOURCE (oh - shouting. Sorry).

It sort-of forced me to use ndiswrapper.

I miss not having that choice.

I meet the same trouble that even make me a litter surprise: There's no package named "kernel-source" in all 4 CDs, And googled results say it is possible to install kernel-source packages by MCC, but, when I query the string "kernel-source" in the searching bar, nothing returned.

Finally, as jib2 comment, I download the kernel-souce by the following link.
Code:
# wget ftp://mirror.tuxinator.org/MandrivaLinux/official/updates/2007.0/i586/media/main/updates/kernel-source-2.6.17.8mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586.rpm
I spend about two hours in such matter, and now fixed.
Hope my experience helpful for your reference.

Regards,
Phillip

PhillipHuang,
Please see post 3 in this thread. I provided direction for adding an Updates media source using the Package Manager. I also provided a link to proper direction for installing a kernel package in Mandriva Linux.

The full range of Software packaged for use with Mandriva Linux is far too large to fit on any removable medium. Mandriva has set up ftp mirrors across the WEB containing the Internet Software Media Sources (repositories). If you have not done so, you should configure the Internet Software Media Sources for use with the Mandriva Package Manager (or urpmi). I have written an article on my LQ Blog to help.

HTH,

The source code was certainly on the DVD of 2007.0 and was a piece of cake to install with package manager. On 2007.1 they don't put it on the DVD for some reason, does seem odd considering how often you need the source for compiling. All that's on the 2007.1 DVD is something called source-stripped and source-update (something like that) and you do now seem to have to use urpmi to get the source. This is slightly frustrating if you have multiple machines you need the source for. Anyone know of a way to download the rpm and copy it to other machines rather than just installing it via urpmi?
