Can't shut down

Hello,

when I try to shut down my Mandriva 2006 PowerPack PC, I come to the "stopping portmap services [OK]"

then a new line is created and the system freezes, I can type on the new line and even give commands such as init 6, but the system will not shut down or reboot.

This is very annoying as I have to do an error check on my harddrive on every boot.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Thanks

UPDATE: Now I cant start KDE either, I just get to a blue screen with the cursor showing an X... What is happening?!

ok I ran an interactive start and disabled eth0, sit0 and wlan0 and now KDE boots fine... :S
