hai,
i have the same problem one day then find what is it?
the solution is simple.
the window goes back to login window shows that u r not able to load the KDE BECAUSE OF THE PERMISSION.(/etc/ permission )
go to failsafe mode and modify

#chmod a+rwx /etc/

this will really help you......

There is something in the bootup that is changing the permissions. I would check the rc.conf file and see if it has something in there. It would be chmod, chgrp or something like that.

That is weird. Sounds more like a bug from a update or something to me.

Oh, if you use the init runlevels, you may want to check those to. It may a script that you can disable to stop that. May be some security thing. Still though.

it might be my fault but now i do not know how to rectify it( i am a newbie)
i tried installing clamav before all this started ( using a tarball ) .......i made a user , installed the software using make install but could get it to work after that. anyways i think the whole problem started after that.
i have tried uninstalling it ( make uninstall) removing the user created. but nothing works

where would i find rc.conf?...its not in /etc
lately few other problems have started too.( after i managed to log in using chmod)...after running for sometime the system would just stop doing anything. it wont "hang" as such. but if i try to open any folder , application, terminal.. it will 'try' for sometime and then nothing happens . when i check i find that /etc permision hasbeen changed again to allow root only
i have to change permission again for etc or i have to restart the system to get it working.

how can i get out of this mess?

....i know ...i am a victim of my own idiocy...

You have probably changed security level or had it screwed up.
Check which SECURE_LEVEL you have in /etc/sysconfig/msec and check the corresponding /usr/share/msec/perm file.

as i said earlier it was because my own stupidity that the prob arose in the first place.
while trying to install clamav.....when i had to edit config file to get it running. in order to edit the file i tried to change the permission of the file using mandrake control centre...and ended up adding a rule changing the permission of the the whole "/etc"
i know it was stupid .....................hey i am a noob tryin to grasp a bit of linux....sorry for wasting your time...and thanks again

No waste of time. Nothing is a waste in Linux. We all learn it's just better to learn from someone else's mistake than from our own.
