Can't get the computer to shut off automatically
 
Can't get the computer to shut off automatically. I select turn off computer and it goes through the shut down process and makes a loud click like it tried to and then just freezes. any ideas?

sounds like a power management issue...

does your motherboard use APM or ACPI?? make sure you have the appropriate daemon running...

if it's an APM board try using this command (as root) before issuing a shutdown:

modprobe apm
if the shutdown works properly then you know you need to add the modprobe apm to your startup scripts or uncomment the apm line in your modules.conf or wherever your modules are set...

if it's an ACPI board make sure you have an ACPI kernel and there's probably an acpid daemon that needs to be running...

Turning ACPI on along with no local APIC usually works.

Assuming your motherboard supports ACPI, the easiest way to resolve this is to go to Mandrake Control Center, Boot, and check the "Enable ACPI" checkbox. Worked for me.

Mine does the same thing. All that you have to do when it gets frozen is click on the same button that you use to start the computer. That will turn it off. That is a bit simpler.

If it's "frozen" you can't click on anything.

What he is talking about is completely different.

At the last phase the system issues a halt that also powers it off.

By this point the graphical interface has been stopped, and the mouse is obviously not available.

This is not working for him.

I believe that in this case, when he says "click the same button you used to start the computer" he means the computer's physical power button, which is what you use to start the computer. I believe that this was the intent.

He will just have to do what mac57 suggested, no less, no more. It works for me, too.

err, I never said that I click a button, I said that it makes a loud click and then freezes:) However, I do have to click the button on the face of the pc to finish the power down cycle.

it's an asus a7n8x deluxe, it should support acpi. I will try it and let you know tomorrow.

got it working, had to enable apci and disable the other.
