can't find xfree86config

i've been away from the house for a while and when i got back to my linux box running mandrake 10, all of a sudden it's unable to boot into gui mode (using kde) and when i try to execute the gui from the command prompt, it says it can't find the xfree86config file. is there any explanation to why this has happened or if it's possible to reinstall those particular sets of files needed for the gui w/o having to reinstall the whole OS?

It's possible to fix the XFree file. Login from the command line as root and run
Code:
xf86config
You need to research your monitor's horizontal and vertical refresh rates and the amount of memory in your video card. The refresh rates can be in the manual that came with the monitor, or you can google for them. This site has a good howto for xf86config. It deals with running it on Slackware, but it applies to any distribution.
