Question can't find libjvm.so?

I installed the jre, but when I try to install a java program, I get an error:

"error while loading shared libraries: libjvm.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

libjvm.so is physically located in /usr/java/jredir/lib/i386/client (and server, and classic). However, when I try to add one of them to $PATH, I still get the same error.

Any ideas anyone?

Try adding it to LD_LIBRARY_PATH and see if that works. I think you should not need to do that however. Do you have a JAVA_HOME env variable? (or CLASSPATH or J2REDIR)?

I think these should be there (for your path mentioned):

JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jredir
CLASSPATH=:/usr/java/jredir/lib
J2REDIR=/usr/java/jredir

...and you should have /usr/java/jredir/bin in your PATH.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I had the following already set up. (just added the LD_LIBRARY_PATH that you recommended, but still no dice)

PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/jre1.3.1_12/bin:
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre1.3.1_12/bin:
LD_LIBRARY=/usr/java/jre1.3.1_12/lib/i386:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/java/jre1.3.1_12/lib/i386:

export PATH
export JAVA_HOME
export LD_LIBRARY
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
