Can't autologin to Gnome

I started out using K-desktop when installed Mandrake 9.1. After finding several things in K are buggy, decided to try Gnome. I like Gnome now much better. BUT, after trying for hours to use Mandrake control center and GDM configurator (I am laughing now at my own ineptness) the blasted system still boots into K when I reboot.
I would gladly edit one or more config files if I knew which ones to pick on. Anyone have a suggestion?

does it go to graphical login by default? if so, edit /etc/inittab. change id:5:initdefault: to read id:3:initdefault:

that will get you a text login on boot. try it. then type kdm at the prompt that comes up, after logging in as root. this will give you the kdm desktop manager. from here you can choose whatever you want. if it works fine, you can edit the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. add kdm as the last line of the file. if kdm is not installed, then try gdm. this will let you choose your session as well.

hopefully this helps. good luck.

also, to test for these programs, you can hit ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X and get to a command prompt. then from the prompt type xdm or gdm. let me know if this helps.

Tray this: Mandrake Control Center>boot>DrakBoot>...look for a system mode section and check "launch X-Window at start", also check "Yes, I want automatic login for this user/desktop" choose user, and choose gnome as default desktop.

Well, the main control for determining wether kdm or gdm is used at boot seems to be /etc/sysconfig/desktop. It has only one line - that ends in either kdm or gdm. I changed it to gdm and magically the system tried to use gdm, but then gave an error about having to change owner and group of /var/lib/gdm to "gdm".
So I had to use the command # chown gdm:gdm gdm and finally got the gnome destop manager to run, only know that I have used it for a very short time I kind of think I like the way Kde works after all - the desktop itself seems more stable and starts and stops more consistently - but you never know until you try!

Thanks for the suggestions.
