bypassing Having to pay for latest software
 

I was wondering if there were any apt repositories or urpmi or yast repositories that I could throw into my config to allow me to download and install the latest KDE among other software. Currently the "official" repositories are lacking much of the latest software.

Any help would be greatly apreacieated.

BTW I am familiar with Debian and other distros. It has been a while since the last time I used Mankdrake/iva.

If you have a distribution that charges you to get the latest software, then it's time to change distributions. I recommend Fedora Core 5 if you like leading edge software.

There are several unofficial repositories that give you the software offered in "the Club." If you search rpmfind.net, you will find them. Use Mandriva as a search function. One place is www.mde.djura.org

BTW, Fedora Core 5 would not work with Nvidia drivers when it was first released. They fixed it, but what a bonehead play!

To go past the official releases you are moving into cooker teritory.

That means that you are a developer/contributor, have a wide knowledge of linux's and are not worried about your computer not working sometimes.

Because the developer/cooker packages may not work on "all" systems.

But if you insist, have a go at this, they have a forum and I have found it to be quite good.

SoS packages are backported from cooker to the latest stable release. They are safe (and IMHO more stable than mde packages) to use if you follow their instructions.

I ended up getting so fed up with it I wiped it and put in SUSE 10.1 to play with for a while. It is woking good for me thus far.

Add servers to your urpmi list.
 

you can do what I do and just use ftp servers.

Mandrake 10.1:
urpmi.addmedia usc-main http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/dis...586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia usc-contrib http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/dis.../media/contrib with media_info/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia --update usc-update http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/dis...1/main_updates with media_info/hdlist.cz


so if your using mandrake 10.1 you can just use these servers (there are many for all versions)

urpmi package name to install
urpme package name to remove
