Thumbs down Bug in Xorg 6.9 ?

Hello all.
I just upgraded from Mandrake 10.1 to Mandriva2006. Although everything went well through installation, 15 minutes after login, my screen just freezes, with no response from mouse or keyboard, and I'm forced to perform a violent reboot.

I researched the web to understand what's wrong and my conclusion is that there seems to be a bug in the latest version of Xorg 6.9, which causes this freezing with most ATI cards (mine is ATI X300). I have found many posts on this subject.

If this is true, I must say I'm awfully disapointed with Mandriva. To put out a new version of XOrg that doesn't support such a popular card as ATI ?! As (un)stable as a beta version?! Eventually I can fix this, returning to an earlier version of Xorg (by the way if anyone as some insight on this I would appreciate any help/comments) but the question is where is linux going? People want to put out a system to be used by everyday's user, to compete with Windows, and in this very moment I am able to write this thread because I have a partition running Windows XP, saves the day...

The more linux evolves, the more unstable it becomes?! After 10 years using linux I'm seriously thinking of starting using windows: for the moment is seems more stable!

Man, am I angry!
Cheers!

I remember something about this over at the Mandriva Club forums.

Here it is:

http://forum.mandrivaclub.com/viewtopic.php?t=40905

Sorry I didn't mention this before, because I didn't make the connection between the two issues.

Also if you ever have any problems or issues with mandriva, you should post over there as well as here, because there are always mandriva folks like Adam Williamson roaming around to help out.

Thumbs up

Hey Purelithium,

thanks a lot for your tip. I managed partialy to correct the problem (no more crashing but sticked to a 800x600 resolution...)

I just "up-downgraded" to 2005 L.E. (uses Xorg 6.8) and now I have a system that works, only I'm stuck with kde 3.3 among other things

Swear to God this is the last mandrake/conectiva/mandriva/whatever I install.. man I'm I still angry!

Cheers

I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 200
(Ati claims is based on the X300)

there isnt really a problem with X 6.9
it just doesnt have drivers included for X series

My card worked fine on generic SVGA drivers

(You MUST NOT use any radeon drivers included since they arent for x series cards)
when i thought it would be a good idea to force mandriva to use Radeon drivers even though no X series were listed
i was shocked and dismayed that it wasnt functional.

the drivers are for 9x series cards or earlier.

Use the drivers from the ATI site
installing them from init 4 fixed all my problems.
