Brand new to Linux, need some help getting started...

OK, I am new to Linux, so I decided to take an old computer I managed to score from an office that was down-sizing, and installed Mandriva One 2010 on it. So far I'm loving it, but I have a few problems I'm trying to work out.

1. My music won't play. I have my music on an external HDD, and when I click on a song to play it, an error box pops up that says internal data flow error. Same goes for videos.

2. I checked the box to not use 3D desktop effects, but I would like to go back now and turn them on. How can I do that without having to go through installing the entire OS again?

3. How do I download and install programs? (I'm wanting Banshee)

Mandriva Community Wiki - http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/ would be a good place to start.
As well as Mandriva Official Documentation - http://doc.mandriva.com/

For other repos, take a look at Easy Urpmi - http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

you might need the full 3g ntfs driver to read ntfs drives(only a guess)
try vlc media player install it from the package-manger (configure your computer)
and go to easy urpmi

go system tools / desktop effects
system tools is the svrewdiver/shifter icon (i assume your using kde)

I'm using Gnome. I assumed I was DLing KDE from their site, but I guess I wasn't paying attention and clicked the wrong button. Oh well, I've heard Gnome was more stable than KDE anyways...

only cause there's hardly any apps for it and most Gnome apps run on KDE anyway
I've heard the POPE uses KDE.
