Bootload problem lilo/grub

I have recently installed Mandrake and for test a few other distros (Fedora and suse) (not at the same time) When I install the bootloader to mbr on hda the next time i boot i get a black screen with the letter L in the top left. if i am using lilo if i installed grub it would say grub in the top left. I have no clue whatto do. I am running windows swap and linux(ext2) in that order. right now i just went to linux rescue and restored windows boot loader and that seemed to work fine.

Does anyone have a solution or have a way i can boot from floppy disk or something. Thanks in advance

Some versions of grub and lilo can't boot an os if it's startup code is after a certain point on the hard disk. Can you boot using the rescue option on the cd, get to a console and type fdisk -l /dev/hda to get a partition listing so we can see how the partitions are laid out on your hard disk.

I did that and came up with
Device boot id system (with other stuff not listed start and end)
/dev/hda1 * 7 hpfs/ntfs
/dev/hda2 f w95 ext d (lba)
/dev/hda5 82 Swap
/dev/da6 83 Linux

It looks as though your linux filesystem is way at the 'end' of your hard disk and the kernel is out of grub's/lilo's reach. It's normally best to have a 500Mb or so partition at the start of the disk for linux to start from, which gets mounted as /boot, your windows NTFS partition can come after that and be whatever size you want, then your linux ext2/ext3 partition and your swap partition. That way both your linux kernels and your windows startup files are within the bootloader's grasp.

There really isn't an easy way of adjusting this. If you can find a partition management program that lets you move and re-size partitions give it a shot. You'll need to shrink your ntfs drive by about 500Mb or so, then 'move' the partition and it's data so it's tight against the partitions at the end of the disk, our linux/swap partitions. Then it's probably easier to do a reinstall of mandrake, and when you come to the partitioning bit, choose custom partitioning, and make a new partition in the empty space at the start of the disk. make sure you set the mount point for this to /boot, and the other linux filesystem at the end of the disk neets it's mount point set as /

You'll need to format both the partitions, and then let the installer do it''s magic. After that you shouldn't have any more problems getting into linux or windows

I downloaded Partition Magic If i move the partitons around can i avoid formatting the ntfs partition. and just install lilo after formatting the linux drive which will be in front and mbr at front of that?
