that might be a good guess. Norton, & other anti virus software will check the MBR for boot sector viruses. ironically (or sadly) if you allow a Linux install to write to the MBR, most anti virus programs will detect that as a virus attack & try to prevent/correct it. i'd try going into Norton, disabling boot sector scanning & protection. try rebooting. if it still hangs, pop in the MDK install CD, hit F1, then type rescue at the prompt. choose the "repair bootloader" option & let it rewrite MBR, then try booting again.
