Booting problem with Mandrake 10 Community

I have tried to install Mandrake (I removed it in the end). At first it didn't run the installer, I had to use some "noacpi" boot parameter, just I can't remember all of everything that is was. Anyway, I installed fine. When I came to boot, it got the same problem as I originally had with the installer.

I need to know what the boot parameter probably was (so I can reinstall Mandrake), and if I can pass that to the kernel on boot.

Any help?

I had to install Mandrake 10.0 Community with the option noapic.

If lilo is your boot loader you need to boot into linux, insert noapic in /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo. My configuration file has a line with append="noapic devfs=mount acpi=ht....

If you cannot boot linux from the HD, I believe that the installation CD gives you the option to get into a mode where you can fix this kind of problems.

Thanks.

Though where is the rest of the boot parameter? It just goes into ...

I would try the CD thing but I deleted my Mandriva installation. And I don't remember the specific parameter to reinstall it.

Thanks for helping though :)

boot into failsafe and then use vi to look at your /etc/lilo.conf and copy what it says on your failsafe, the only thing you need to leave out is the failsafe part, but the rest of the lines are the same.

I can't.

Heres what happened:

- I installed Mandrake with the boot parameter I dont know anymore.

- It installed but I couldnt boot it with anything including failsafe

- I removed it (formatted the partition and restored Windows MBR)

- Now I can't install it back because I dont know the parameter

I have no Linux installed and I can't reinstall Mandrake.

Possible Solution

Open up a terminal and then type as a root type in vi /etc/lilo.conf~ and see if you can see what you changed. If it doesn't tell you the vi /etc/lilo.conf.old there should be one. If its not there then check /boot/ directory.

I have no Linux on my computer any more, I need to reinstall Mandrake but I can't!

Doesn't matter anyway, now I am going to get Slackware 10.1

Thanks for trying to help though!

I recently found a note (which I'd written) which actually said the parameter. (I must have written it so I remembered, but I lost it! :)) Now I can reinstall Mandrake but I find Slackware to be better.
