Hi,

I am a newb to Mandrake. I recopiled a newer version of the kernel - did everything right (as far as I know - no errors) but the new kernel won't boot. Verified all the files present in /boot,the lilo data, etc. When I choose my new custom kernel from the lilo menu I get a kernel panic because it can't mount the root filesystem - Mount: error 6 mounting ext3 flags defaults blah blah blah.

This is so frustrating as I have no issues like this recompiling on other Linux OSs. Does anybody know if there is something unique about Mandrake/Mandriva that I'm missing?

Is the file system compiled staticly into your kernel? The configuration answer MUST be Y, not M, otherwise the drivers cannot be loaded. Since lilo gets the absolute disk address of the start of the kernel, it can be loaded without any knowledge of the file system; however, to load / the structure of the disk has to be known.
