boot loader


Can someone tell me what boot loader mandrake linu 9.1 uses by default and where I can find it?

Most default to lilo. So you would need to look for lilo.conf. (only root can edit and save that file though).

The command you are looking for is whereis. As in whereis lilo.conf.

Yes ive found lilo.conf in /etc and added my new kernel to it but it isnt showing on the boot loader screen which is why im confused.

probably you are using grub boot loader, and you should take a look on /etc/grub.conf.

grub.conf doesnt exist which is why im even more confused.
When I just log out of a session my new kernel is presented to me in a simple dialog box, this is obviously lilo where I have edited the lilo.conf file, but when the pc restarts or starts from cold there is no option to boot to my new kernel.
Any other options.

After you've edited lilo.conf you need to type :

/sbin/lilo

as root user to make the changes take effect.
