boot hangs after new installation LE2005

Hi,
I installed LE2005 through ftp. No errors during installation.
When booting, kernel and initrd are loaded, root-fs is fsck'ed
and then, when mounting the root-fs as rw, I get:

/etc/init.d/functions: line 77: /bin/gettext: Permission denied

and about 30 similar 'Permission denied'-errors concerning mount, bash, rm, modprobe and others.
Then the system hangs. Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work. No console.

Hardware should be ok. I had SuSE9.2 installed in the same partition.
Partition is /dev/hda3. hda1 being 15GB and hda2 80GB. Maybe a problem here?

I cannot find similar problems in this forum or on internet.
I tried tweaking fstab, which now looks like this:

/dev/hda3 / ext2 users 1 2
/dev/hdb1 /home/simon/mp3 reiserfs user,notail,noauto,users 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,
sync 0 0
/dev/hda2 /mnt/suse reiserfs notail,defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb2 /mnt/vmware vfat umask=0,iocharset=utf8,defaults 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat umask=0,iocharset=utf8,defaults 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda4 swap swap pri=42 0 0

I tried a reinstall, same thing there.

Thanks for any suggestions!

yours, Simon

Thumbs down

Hello,

I get the exact same problem :-(

I got it with the both the "Mandrake 10.2 RC2" CD and the "Mandriva 2005LE" DVD.

The only solution I found is to install a 10.0, set up urpmi with 2005LE sources, and upgrade. Only the kernel does not upgrade ok, I get kernel panic at reboot. Except that, everything is fine (but running with the kernel from 10.0).

I checked the /etc/fstab, it seems ok, but there are many lines like this one :
# Added by KNOPPIX

Why ??? Does Mandriva now includes some things from Knoppix? Maybe the hardware detection ?

I checked the attributes of the files which get the "Permission denied" error, they seem OK.

Thanks for your help !
Yann

Thumbs up

Hello,

IT WORKS NOW !!!

Here's what I did :
I booted with another Linux and edited the /etc/fstab
I changed this line:
Code:
/dev/hda7 / ext3 users 1 1
into:
Code:
/dev/hda7 / ext3 defaults 1 1
