Question Best to update everything?

I have Mandriva 2007 PowerPack+. I'd like to download and install ALL available updates. The update manager program is a decent enough tool, but it has several problems:

* It doesn't have a "Select All" option
* It constantly stops me to ask if it's ok to install the required packages
* It shows me packages I can't actually select
* It has so many friggin folders within folders, it could take me an hour or more to select everything, and then half the time it locks up or fails

I'd really like to just download and install ALL the available updates for my PC with a minimum of fuss and effort. Is there a way (UI or command line) to do this?

CLI

First run "urpmi.update -a"
Then run "urpmi --auto --auto-select"

And go drink coffee or watch TV. This will update your data base and then automatically install updates to all packages that you have installed. Please note that you should already have configured your sources via EasyURPMI.

Thank you, I will try that this evening. Certainly seems a lot easier than the graphical interface.

I forgot to add a note: you must be root to do all of this. So either su to root or use sudo.

I've been running into dependency issues recently when updating (specifically notification-daemon conflicts). Urpmi --allow-force has sorted it out, but was wondering if "urpmi --auto --auto-select" followed by --allow-force would work for the first major update after a fresh install?

Well, there are very few circumstances that I would recommend using "force." As a rule, if you set up urpmi correctly with main, contrib, updates, plf-free and plf-nonfree, you will resolve all dependency issues. If you encounter them after this setup, then you are trying to install an rpm not designed for Mandriva or a package compiled under a restrictive environment. I think that your issues are more that you have not configured urpmi sources completely. Be sure to not use cooker sources or rpm's intended for a different release than what you are running.

And there lies the rub. So far as I'm aware I don't have any Cooker repositories added. I have Update Source (from MCC), Main Updates, Contrib Updates, PLF Free, Non-Free & Backports (from EasyUrpmi), & am using MCC to get my updates.

The problem has been with the last 2 updates of notification-daemon conflicting with notification-daemon-xfce - the first one I ended up downloading from PBone with no problem, including dependencies; the second one (last night) I used --allow-force in Console, which again worked a treat. I cannot uninstall xfce (which I don't even remember installing!) without losing gnome-panel, evolution, & several other key components of gnome (yup, I use gnome).
