Beginner Questions - free space and Internet
Hi guys,
I´m completly new to Linux, so I have 2 questions for the beginning: 1.) I installed Madrake Linux 10.1. I had 20,0 GB free on my Hdd, meaning this was space which was not partitioned or used. I guess Madrake uses now only 5Gb of this space. How can I change this? 2.) I´m currently writing this over Windows XP, and I don´t know how to set up an internet connection. I have ADSL and an username and a password from my provider. I hope you can halp me, but after the thigs I´ve seen(e.g how fast Linux is) I´m really happy with it, it would be good if I can work more with it! Thank you very much and sorry for my bad English, reno |
1) show ya output from fdisk -l /dev/hdX, and replace X by ur device where gnu/linux is installed
2) you can use ur distro config tools or search for howtos over google, you should find stuff like this http://www.rhapsodyk.net/adsl/HOWTO/ http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/ |
Hi again!
What du you mean with "show output"? I have no idea how to do this, I´m completly net to this! Thank you, I´ll try out you links! greets, reno |
HI!
Mhhh is there not a special programm for Mandrake or so? Ich need a really newbie :newbie: tutorial! thank you again. reno |
as i said, mandrake should have some distro-own config tools, i cant recall the name (drakconf? dont know). but u can setup ur dsl connection with the mandrake config tools. if you dont find it, look around on mandrake documentation sites, you should find it.
otherwise, the adsl howtos arent really complicated :> "show the output" means u have to run the given command and paste the output into the forum so we can have a look on it |
1) What do you mean by "changing" the 5 gigs Mandrake uses? Did it set up a 5 gig root partition? Did it only use 5 gigs of your drive total, leaving 15 gigs unformatted?
2) Is your connection wireless or is it a regular connection? |
1.) It did only use 5Gb, leaving the other 15 gb free.
2.) my connection is an ordinary one. I found out that you could set up Internet connections over an assistent, but my provider isnßt listed in there, I can only lind Tonline an 1&1, but I have Strato. What should i do? Thanks a lot, reno |
As far as your hard drive is concerned, you are able to change that through "Partitions" in the Control Center. MENU -> SYSTEM -> CONFIGURATION -> CONFIGURE YOUR COMPUTER -> MOUNT POINTS -> PARTITIONS. From there, it shows your hard drive and how it's partitioned. There should be two red partitions separated by a small green one. The first one is ROOT ( / ), the second is SWAP (swap), and the third is most likely HOME ( /home ). If I understand correctly, you want to resize your partitions to utilize the whole drive. The best way to do this is to resize the /home partition. BACK UP YOUR DATA ON THE /home PARTITION FIRST.
1) Left click on the red /home partition. 2) Click "Unmount" 3) Click "Resize" About the internet connection, I may or may not be able to help. I always set up my connection through Control Center also. MENU -> SYSTEM -> CONFIGURATION -> CONFIGURE YOUR COMPUTER -> NETWORK & INTERNET. Then I go to "Remove a Connection" and make sure there are no previous internet connections set up. Then I get out of that and go to "New Connection" and set it up by picking my connection type and using all default settings on every step after that. Then I will get out of that and go to "Monitor Connections" to see if it's working. But my connection is wireless cable so it may be a little different from yours. I'm not sure how much that helps, but there you go. |
5 gb might have been too small by the way...i know when i began on the same distro all the default stuff was about 5.5 gigs...........you might wanna make the partition larger if youre looking to be on linux for a while

lol i think thats what he was saying up there ^^^.....sorry i didnt read it all...

Hi guys!
I´ll print this and try it out. Thank you anyway, I´ll report wheter it´s a sucess or not! Thank you all, reno |
Thanks a lot! The stuff with the harddisk worked fine.
Internet still doesn´t work, because of the fact that I can pick up my connection type an so on, but with the PPPoE I need so select a provider, and mine is not listed in there. There must be a way to get this to work! Has anybody an idea? Thank you very much, reno |
