It can be done from 2 methods, linux-side or Windows-side
Linux Side
mount -t smbfs -o username:password //server/share /mnt/backup
tar xvjf /mnt/backup/* /mnt/backup/UsersArchive-date.tar.bz2
This depends on the security that is setup within samba, assuming it is there.
This method could be put into a script and run within cron on a daily basis.
--------------
Windows Side
use NTbackup to create the backup.
Specify that the backup should be stored to a network location on the linux machine.
This could be scheduled from the windows scheduler to occur daily.
I'm not sure if ntbackup can compress the data, but the linux version above can.

Hi, same question but with a twist, what if I have a server 2003 os that needs daily backups to a linux server (ubuntu server) that is not on the same network. What would be the safest & most efficient way to backup say.. C:\webserver\ folder to the linux box on a daily basis..

The same idea applies, I fail to see the difference in your question. FYI: The tar options should have been cvjf not xvjf

If file sharing isn't enabled, is ftp? You could put a batch file that would ftp the backup to your linux box every night.
