hi there,

i never used mandrake but

if you have a prompt in your linux boot loader (grub/lilo) you can put an option like

Code:
 $your_kernel acpi=off
and for the automatic login you should check something like /etc/inittab.
But I suppose that Mandrake has some config tool that would allow you to set it up without vi.

regards

boot into failsafe mode. su to root at the login. now, you're going to edit your lilo.conf file to turn off acpi. we're gonna use vim to do it. follow these instructions........

1. at the prompt, type vim /etc/lilo.conf (hit enter)

2. hit the i key on yout keyboard to get into edit/insert mode

3. using the arrow keys or page up page down keys, navigate the the "append=" line of the boot=vmlinux section of lilo.conf.

4. look for the entry in that line that says acpi=on or acpi=ht & change it to acpi=off. you can use the backspace key to erase the word "on". see my example below..........

Code:
image=/boot/vmlinuz
	label="mandrake10.0"
	root=/dev/hda7
	initrd=/boot/initrd.img
	append="devfs=mount acpi=off resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent"
	vga=788
	read-only
5. after you are done editing the line, hit the esc key on your keyboard to exit edit/insert mode.

6. type :wq then hit enter. that will save the changes you made & exit vim.

7. you will now be back at the command prompt. finally, run lilo to update it. do so by typing lilo -v (hit enter)

8. reboot

when you get to your desktop, open Mandrake Control Center & go to system->services & make sure acpi is not set to start at boot or running. it shouldn't be, be just double check it.

thank you for your replies. I solved the problem by creating another user and copying the files over.

I want acpi to run so that atleas i get batterystatus displayed. Its when i try to use other functions like suspend and cpu throttling it crashes. not sure why
