Audio CD problem
Hello,
I recently installed Mandrake 10.1 on my pentium 3 desktop.
I have one CD ROM drive and another CD R/W drive. I am seeing an unusual problem:
When I insert the Audio CD in the CD R/W drive, the CD player starts and plays the songs. However, when I insert the Audio CD in the CD-ROM drive, the CD player starts, the time counter increments but I cannot hear any sound through the speakers.
I am not getting where the problem may be?
I can play MP3 CDs on both the drives though.
Please help.
Thanks,
Andy.

You need to make sure that "Aux" is unmuted in you mixer. Use either "alsamaixer", "kmix" or whatever mixer is available on your system to unmute it.

Your CD-RW is probably plugged to your sound card with an audio cable but your CDR is not.

Linux requires the CD player to be plugged in directly to the sound-card
You cna get around this by using XMMS as your cdplayer and using it's Digital Extraction mode in the cdinput plug-in.

Some sound cards have multiple audio input ports for internal devices.
e.g. the SBLive & Audigy both feature CD-IN and AUX-IN right on the card.
I use these BOTH for seperate CD rom drives.
You can also obtain special splitter cables that permit you to hook both drives into the one input. Since only one drive is active at a time, this works fine.
