ATI Radion graphics card drivers
 

I am having problems with the ATI drivers and getting them to run correclty inside of Mandriva. I got the latests ATI driver: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/at...er-8.14.13.run

after chaning the status of the download to executable, you can run this as SU. It says that it laods. If you do a modprobe -l fglrx is shows the module is loaded into memory. I have tried to configure with fglrxconfig, and the Xwindows conf file is reconfigured. I reboot but still I don't get any performance from the GLgear. (about 200 frames)

I have manually installed fglrx on a SUSE distro, but it was very unstable. ( did however get 1000fps)

I am sure that the card is capable of doing much more but can't figure out how to get it loaded. Are there any success stories out there with an ATI Radion 9800pro?

I gave up on ATI drivers once Mandriva switched to X.org. I had good results with XFree86.

i had same problem with 9600XT

1. install kernel source if it is not installed
2. download http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/fg....13-1.i386.rpm
3. in console run this as su

after installation you should run fglrxconfig and that's it

I got an erorr that sources don't match the kernel. :scratch:

Will be trying it again tonight, just wondering if there is an easy way to make sure I have the same version of the kernel and kernel sources.

finally got it to install. Glxgears went from 100 FPS to 2000 FPS

Tux racer went from agonizingly slow to stand-still slow.

what gives??

Grr. I want to run cedega and do away with Windoze altogether. IF linux native Tux Racer is having a cow, I shudder to think what running a windoze game in an emulator must feel like.

I gave it a try again from the RPM and this time it complained about a set of libsnd++ not being installed. Loaded them it is started to work.

Now I have one last problem with the drivers, and am wondering if it's just my install. It won't let me shut down. You cannot go to a terminal as SU and drop out of Xwindows. (ie init 3, or init 6, or init 0) So you are left that the only way to shutdown is to pull the plug. I don't like doing a hard shutdown, as I don't like testing the journaling filesystem to make sure it's doing its job.

you want to say that after driver instalation, you cannot shutdown the copmuter?

Yes. After installing the FGLRX driver, I now cannot do a clean shutdown. Upon X-windows closing down, the machine just sit's there with a black screen and the power on. It does not pass go, does not collect $200.

I have had the same problem with SUSE 9.1 and the older ATI drivers (around the Jan 2005 era). It has done it on two different machines,and I just figured before that it was a fluke... now ???

I take it that It's something to do with me.

I'm installing the drivers from the installer script into Mandriva 2005. I can get it to install with no errors. and everything works except 3d accel. Glxgears is giving me 100-200. I check glxinfo and it still shows mesa drivers. BUT the xorg.0.log shows everything loading and enabling succesfully.

the only error in the log I see is:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:1) found

which, from what I've found on the net, has to do with not using both heads on my card and it can be ignored. (is this true?)

The entire log is below just in case u see something I missed.

I don't know if this is related or not but the symptoms seem to be. I also have a winmodem that requires linuxant drivers. These have been installed and registered, again, with no errors. Trying to dial (either through kppp or a terminal) ATDT causes to modem to pick up (I can hear the dialtone) then nothing it just sits there waiting for "CONNECT." It never actually dials. The Country code is correct. That's the second driver I've installed that says they are working fine but just don't.

I've had both of these installed on past version of Mandrake with no problems. (Ok... some little problems, u know how stuborn ATI drivers have been in the past :) )

If your ATI installation worked (which your X log seems to indicate), then fglrx is the module taking care of 3D accel now. Easier to check its info directly:

Like I said, according to your log, looks like everything is fine.

So not sure why glxgears is giving such poor performance. Did you try rebooting? After installing my ATI drivers, rebooting casued my performance to jump, although it was as never as low yours to start off with.

Hi,

I just installed the latest ATI drivers, 8.16.20 on my LE distro, and I am having the same slowness when running tuxracer. I have no clue why it is running so slow, especially when I have a 2GHz Centrino CPU and 128MB ATI Radeon 9600 (I have a wide-screen Dell 8600)??? Also, my mouse pointer does not appear in tuxracer anymore.

Anyone have any tips on fixing these two problems? I did not see any possible solutions thus far in this thread.

Couple of other things:

is there some specific things I should and should not activate or set up in my xorg.conf file? I ran fglrxconfig and tried activating and deactivating things for no avail.

when I run glxgears, I get a consistent 250 FPS!! Not what I was expecting for my system of its caliber.

If it's only 3-d acceleration that's not working (what does is say in your X logs?), then most likely it's because the fglrx module is not kosher with your kernel version. Install the kernel-sources package matching your kernel (type uname -r to determine this) and then do the following:

Build the fglrx kernel module

1. cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
2. sh make.sh

Install the fglrx kernel module
3. cd /lib/modules/fglrx
4. sh make_install.sh

With fglrxconfig, stick with the defaults.

As for your mouse, etc, the stuff ATI writes into xorg.conf file is not optimal. I merged the info (mouse, monitor) from my original conf file into the one created by ATI (deleting the ATI written stuff as appropriate).

I actually got it to work late last night, although currently I am loading the module manually, but I am seeing 2200 FPS.

Part of the solution was very much what you recommend, install the driver using rpm. I have found the *.run script ATI provides is kind-of worthless. It even knocked out my start-up such that I start up in 'init 3' instead of 'init 5'...need to figure out how to fix that.

I have also discovered I do not even need to run fglrxconfig...I am still using the xorg.conf Mandrake provided me when i did the install!

The big key I found was that upon doing a 'fglrxinfo', if you do not see 'ATI' anywhere, your ATI driver is really not loaded. If you are seeing 200 some-odd FPS, your system is most likely still using Mesa instead of your actual ATI driver and card.

I'll provide my solution later on tonight. (I'll probably do some HOWTO post and then do another reply here providing the link).
