anyone use bt silver adsl modem with 10.0?

Hi, i'm having problems setting up the silver modem (speedtouch 330) on ten. I keep on getting the "must use 2.4 or higher" message on configuration. have removed the 1.2.2 rpm and installed speedtouch-1.2-1mdk.i586 instead put my details in (using pppoe - is that right??) but after a few seconds of trying the right light goes from green to orange. two questions.

1. how can i get more than a failed message - is their log files?, and
2. how do i get it up and running?

cheers, ross

It's a kernel related problem!!

You've installed mdk with the default boot kernel that's 2.6 and with this the utility to configure the connection won't work!
This is because you get the error message "must use 2.4 or higher"!
This massage is false it should be "must use only 2.4" to give correct information to user.
But this depends on mandrakesoft not by me.
At the same time the driver won't either work with 2.6 kernels.
I can suggest you to try first the following solution but if it doesn't work you must reinstall all!
If you reinstall take care to write alt0 at boot prompt if not you'll fall another time in the same trouble!!!

Now the solution to try:

Using drakconf delete the configured connection.
Than (always with drakconf and always as root) you should modify the bootloader configuration in the way it uses kernel 2.4.25 as defined to boot.

Save bootloader configuration and then close all and restart pc.

Before restarting connection configuration take care to look in /usr/share/speedtouch to check out if you have the speedtouch driver (mgmt_rev4.o because the silver speedtouch is not only a 330 model but a 330 Rev4 and the old mgmt.o won't work with this.If you don't have the correct driver post a message with your address and I'll send it to you).

If you've the right driver as above you are ready to configure the connection using drakconf (In the last configuration screen it asks you if you want to "try the connection now" mark no as reply and then click ok to finish wizard make exactly so it's important!!).
IMHO You shouldn't also select to start connection at boot! You can start it when you want how i'm going to explaine.

When you have configured the connection open a terminal and as root type /usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh start at the prompt then press enter key

(N.B. It shoud look like this: [root@localhost RPMS]# /usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh start )
Don't take care of the directory where I was to copy this with the full path of the command you can be wherever you want in the directory tree.

After a few time it should report a green OK in square bracket to say the connection is started.

Now... Start to surf!!!!!

To stop the connection it's sufficient you type as root in a terminal /usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh stop

to restart the connection without restarting the system you shoul try /usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh reload even if fail try

/usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh restart

one of the two should work!!

I hope my help will be usefull for you!!

Let me know!!!

I've forgot an issue in your question!
Normally provider which give usb adsl "modem" uses pppoA.
In Italy it's so but I think it can be the same in GB and if it's so you use the wrong protocol when you say you're using pppoE.
You should ask to your provider which protocol uses your line.
Cheers
